Self-Certification vs. Fit Note — Which Do You Need?
Absence of 7 Days or Fewer
Self-certification is sufficient. You inform your employer of the reason for absence without requiring a doctor’s note. Most employers provide a self-certification form to complete on your return.
Absence of 8+ Days
A fit note from a registered healthcare professional is required by law. This covers all calendar days, including weekends and bank holidays. Employers need this to process statutory sick pay.
Clinical Review & Eligibility
Every submission is individually reviewed by a GMC-registered UK doctor. Fit notes are not automatically generated. Our doctors exercise independent clinical judgement in every case.
To be eligible, your condition must be one that a doctor can appropriately assess remotely based on the information provided. A fit note will only be issued where it is clinically appropriate to do so.
When completing your form, you will need to provide: your full name and date of birth, contact details, the nature of your illness, the date your absence began, your job role and employer details, and any relevant medical history or medications. Your information is handled confidentially in line with standard UK clinical practice.
Limitations & When In-Person Care Is Required
